The group is responsible for conducting research and advisory services of potential emerging diseases found in Malaysia (field diseases: orange spotting disease (CCCVd), Phytoplasma disease, upper stem rot disease (USR), seed diseases: Schizophyllum infection and brown germ and nursery diseases: Leaf spot and anthracnose). The group also looks into biosecurity and quarantine and exotic diseases which one not present in Malaysia such as vascular wilt, bud rot, red ring, sudden wither and lethal wilt. Research is focused on:

i. Biology, epidemiology and etiology
ii. Early detection
iii. Disease resistance, biochemical and molecular studies
iv. Chemical control
v. Sanitation / cultural practice
vi. Biological control
vii. Economic impact and loss of production
