The Tropical Peat Research Institute (TROPI) Unit was established in 2007 with approval from the Cabinet Committee on Palm Oil (CCPO). The TROPI Unit was organized by the existing adminstration system and infrastructure at MPOB to conduct research and development on oil palm planting on tropical peatlands in Malaysia and addressing issues of carbon balance, greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions and biodiversity on tropical peatland. In line with the TROPI Unit mission to become a centre of excellence and reference point for all studies on tropical peat in Malaysia, MPOB has identified four specific research trusts areas that became the TROPI Unit’s research focus, namely biodiversity and environmental, agriculture practice and socioeconomics. The TROPI unit is expected to contribute to the growth and development of oil palm and other agricultural crops on tropical peat via the following:

i. Sustainable development of tropical peat by ensuring a balance between commercial development and the environment;
ii. Economic and wise use of tropical peat for agriculture
iii. Information on the characteristics and distribution of tropical peat areas in Malaysia
iv. Facilitate research activities on tropical peat in Malaysia

To establish an excellent research & development centre for tropical peat ecosystems in Malaysia.

To conduct research and development on tropical peat soil for planting oil palm in order to address issues of carbon balance, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and biodiversity on tropical peat.

To generate and disseminate knowledge and information on managing tropical peat for continued development and productivity of oil palm and other agriculture crops.

To facilitate researchers and students to conduct research on tropical peat in order to enrich the local expertise on tropical peat.

To become the centre of excellence and world’s reference point for all studies on tropical peat.
