Entomology and Integrated Pest Management (EIPM)

Mission

To promote sustainable practices in oil palm management via integrated control of pest and diseases.

Goals

1. To intensify awareness and better integration of biological control agents in pest management,     reducing reliance on pesticides.
2. To promote greater use of integrated disease and weed management with bio agents to reduce     chemical use.

Functions

Entomology and Integrated Pest Management (EIPM) Unit;
To intensify awareness and better integration of biological control agents, to advocates combination of multiple control strategies to achieve long-term pest management solutions and to improve the economic benefits related to the adoption of IPM practices.

Entomology and Ecological Group;
To conduct studies on the ecology due to the oil palm pests and also the beneficial insects vast diversity of form, function and life-cycle, their interaction with oil palm, other organisms and the environment

Integrated Pest Management Group;
To establish ecosystems approach to the control of oil palm pest and to coordinate use of pest and environmental information to design and implement pest control methods that are economically, environmentally and socially sound

Areas of Research 1. Development of optimal cultivation conditions for Bacillus thuringiensis and other microbes.
2. The use of Bacillus thuringiensis to control lepidopteran pests.
3. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for bagworm control.
4. Biodiversity of soil microbes and its functions.
5. Research in microbial processes includes microbial physiology, process design and heterogeneity of a variety of microorganisms.

2. Optimization and scale-up of microbial fermentation process.
3. Kinetics and stoichiometry of growing cultures.
4. Isolation, purification, formulation and production of microbial based products.
5. IPM of bagworm strategies and methods.
Interests Translating discoveries of life sciences into practical and industrial products, processes and techniques that can serve the wellbeing of the oil palm industry and society.
